Giuliani Ordered to Pay Damages for Slandering Georgia Election Officials
August 30, 2023 | by Kaju
A federal judge has ruled that former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani is liable for defaming two Georgia election workers as part of his efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results. Giuliani, who served as former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, had accused Rudy Freeman and Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss of mishandling ballots. They responded by suing him in 2021.
U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell ruled in favor of Freeman and Moss after Giuliani failed to turn over the requested documents and evidence. A trial to determine the damages will take place later.
In her 57-page opinion, Judge Howell stated that Giuliani’s failure to comply with his discovery obligations in this case may be a calculated move to minimize his overall litigation risks. However, she emphasized that such actions have consequences in a court of law.
While playing the victim might work on a public stage, Judge Howell noted that it has hindered the normal process of discovery in this straightforward defamation case and required repeated court intervention.
Giuliani is also facing indictment in Georgia, along with Trump and 17 others, for their efforts to overturn the Georgia election results.
