Prince Harry Reflects on Lack of Support After Returning Home from Afghanistan in New Netflix Series

Prince Harry of Britain revealed in a new Netflix series about the Invictus Games that he did not receive the support he needed when he returned home from combat in Afghanistan. The series, titled “Heart of Invictus,” premiered on Wednesday on the streaming service.

Prince Harry discussed his experience with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how his return from Afghanistan in 2012 triggered emotions that he had suppressed since the death of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12 years old. He expressed that the impact of Diana’s death was never openly discussed.

Harry shared, “The biggest struggle for me was no one around me really could help; I didn’t have that support structure, that network, or that expert advice to identify what was actually going on with me. Unfortunately, like most of us, the first time you consider therapy is when you are lying on the floor in the fetal position probably wishing you had dealt with some of this stuff previously.”

“Heart of Invictus” follows a group of injured soldiers as they prepared for the Invictus Games in The Netherlands last year. The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, is a Paralympic-style event aimed at inspiring military veterans worldwide as they overcome battlefield injuries.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, signed a lucrative content production contract with Netflix after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020 and moving to Southern California. Their previous series, “Harry & Meghan,” premiered last year and detailed their split from the royal family.

Prince Harry, also known as the Duke of Sussex, appeared at a preview screening of the new series in California and emphasized the sacrifices made by veterans and their families in the service of their countries.

Prince Harry said in a video shared on social media, “You guys get to watch it tonight – or at least two episodes – to whet the appetite for the rest of it.”
