President Biden praised Jimmy Buffett, the creator of the popular 1970s song “Margaritaville” and the founder of a thriving business empire, as a legendary American music figure who encouraged people to relax and enjoy life.
Biden’s statement came shortly after Buffett’s death at the age of 76 was announced on social media.
“A poet of paradise, Jimmy Buffett was an American music icon who inspired generations to step back and find the joy in life and in one another,” Biden said. “His clever and nostalgic songs celebrate a distinctively American cast of characters and the coastal way of life, blending together country, folk, rock, pop, and calypso into something truly unique.”
The cause of Buffett’s death was not mentioned in the social media announcement, but it stated that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, music, and dogs.
Biden shared that he and First Lady Jill Biden had met Buffett over the years and that he was just as warm and joyful in person as he was on stage, using his talent to bring people together.
The president acknowledged Buffett’s extensive catalogue of recordings and his numerous awards from the music industry. He also highlighted Buffett’s achievements in other areas, including his success as a businessman, his passion for flying, and his dedication to preserving the Gulf Coast.
“Jill and I send our love to his wife of 46 years, Jane, their children Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron, their grandchildren, and the millions of fans who will continue to cherish him even as he embarks on a new journey,” Biden concluded.
