Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert issued an apology on Friday after being ejected from a musical play in Colorado and falsely denying allegations that she had been vaping during the performance. Surveillance video footage emerged showing Boebert vaping at her seat in a Denver theater, contradicting her campaign’s earlier denial.
In her apology, Boebert acknowledged that her actions were not intended to cause harm, but recognized that they had a negative impact. She was asked to leave the “Beetlejuice” musical following complaints from other audience members about disruptive behavior, including vaping, singing, and phone usage.
The surveillance video captures Boebert vaping before the lights in the theater were turned off. Additionally, it shows her dancing in her seat and using her phone during the performance.
A couple of days after the incident, Boebert admitted on social media to laughing and singing loudly during the musical. She also mentioned in her statement that she was going through a divorce and acknowledged that her behavior was unacceptable.
Boebert, who represents Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, has gained national attention for her assertive style and alignment with the extreme right wing of the GOP. She made headlines for heckling President Joe Biden during his 2022 State of the Union address.
The city-owned Buell Theater, where the incident took place, did not specifically name Boebert in their statement but released the surveillance footage showing her and another person being escorted out of the theater by staff members. According to the theater, the two guests initially refused to leave and made comments suggesting they were important figures who would contact the mayor.
Despite the controversy, Boebert remains in her second term in Congress, representing the western half of Colorado. Her behavior at the musical and subsequent vaping denial have prompted her to issue an apology for the disruption caused.
