On Monday night, Mike Clevinger pitched a six-hitter for his third career complete game, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.

Luis Robert Jr. contributed with a three-run homer, while Tim Anderson had four of the team’s 15 hits.

Clevinger was dominant throughout the game, working on a shutout until Dominic Smith hit a solo home run in the ninth inning. Smith’s slow walk to first base and bat flip sparked a brief exchange of words between him and Clevinger, but it didn’t escalate further. Clevinger eventually struck out Carter Kieboom for the final out.

With this loss, the Washington Nationals have been eliminated from postseason contention. They have struggled recently, dropping six of their last seven games and 16 of their last 21. Since winning the World Series in 2019, the Nationals have failed to make the playoffs in four consecutive seasons.

Clevinger finished the game with seven strikeouts and no walks. He retired 17 of 18 batters at one point during the game. His performance adds to his impressive stats this season, with a 2.71 ERA in his last 13 starts since June 1.
