Temple University is in mourning after the sudden passing of their acting president, JoAnne A. Epps. She collapsed during a memorial service and was transported to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Epps, who was 72 years old, had served the university for nearly four decades.
The cause of Epps’ collapse and subsequent passing is unknown at this time. Ken Kaiser, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Temple, stated that there were no indications of any health issues prior to the incident.
The news of Epps’ passing has left the Temple University community in shock and sadness. Mitchell Morgan, chairman of the Temple board, expressed his grief in a statement, calling Epps a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple University.
Epps’ colleague, Temple University Provost Gregory Mandel, described her as remarkably compassionate and caring. He stated that the university’s Board of Trustees will be meeting to plan for the transition in leadership.
Epps had previously served as the dean of Temple’s law school and provost before being named acting president in April. She was tasked with addressing enrollment and safety concerns following the resignation of the university’s first Black president.
Epps had expressed her commitment to improving the university and believed that her ability to “calm waters” played a role in her selection. She saw her role as a way to make a meaningful contribution to the university she loved.
Governor Josh Shapiro also paid tribute to Epps, describing her as a powerful force and constant ambassador for Temple University. He expressed his condolences to her loved ones and hoped that her memory would be a blessing.
