Negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and the three major U.S. automakers are still ongoing, but Ford Motor has managed to avoid a second strike in Canada. The company reached a tentative labor agreement with Unifor, Canada’s main auto union, just minutes before a strike deadline. While the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, Unifor stated that Ford made a substantial offer. This agreement is seen as a positive step towards securing gains for autoworkers in Canada.

In Canada, Unifor has been negotiating with Ford, General Motors (GM), and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) since August 10th. Ford was selected as the target for these talks, with the intention of securing a favorable deal before moving on to the other automakers. Unifor will now seek similar agreements with GM and Stellantis. However, the progress made with Ford in Canada does not directly impact the UAW strikes in the United States, which began last week at three U.S. plants.

The UAW is demanding a 40% increase in wages over four years, citing the significant rise in pay for automakers’ chief executives during the previous four years. The companies have offered raises of just over 20%. The UAW also seeks improvements in pension plans, company-paid healthcare for retirees, shorter working hours, and an end to the practice of paying new hires lower wages. The strikes and negotiations continue to unfold, with workers voicing their demands and concerns.

While progress in the United States has been limited, Ford’s labor agreement in Canada is a step forward in finding resolutions. The negotiations aim to address the needs of autoworkers and ensure fair working conditions moving forward.
