Ysamar López stood beneath the old hotel’s canopy, exploring the unfamiliar streets of New York City on Google Maps. After a long journey, she had arrived the night before with her two young children. Unbeknownst to her, Venezuela’s foreign minister was about to speak at the United Nations a few blocks away. As López focused on finding warm clothing for her family, she reflected on the uncertainties she faced as an asylum-seeker in the city.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil’s speech at the U.N. came shortly after a panel investigating human rights violations in Venezuela reported that the government has intensified efforts to limit democratic freedoms. In his speech, Gil acknowledged the hardships in Venezuela but blamed U.S.-imposed sanctions for the country’s troubles.

As Venezuelan migrants continue to arrive in New York City, the city has struggled to provide housing and resources for them. The Roosevelt Hotel, once a luxury establishment, is now a center for asylum-seekers. The city has had to open emergency shelters in school gyms and parks to comply with housing regulations.

The crisis in Venezuela, marked by poverty and political repression, has led millions of people to seek refuge elsewhere. Many face the dangers of crossing the Darien Gap, a jungle area between Colombia and Panama. The number of migrants crossing through this area could reach up to 400,000 this year, according to U.N. groups.

In an effort to address the situation, the U.S. recently announced temporary legal status for Venezuelan migrants, making it easier for them to work in the country. However, there have been delays in establishing a fund to provide aid for Venezuelans, as foreign governments and banks have not released frozen assets.

As López looked for warm clothing for her children, she expressed hope for a solution to her situation. With the ongoing struggles in Venezuela, she, like many others, seeks a better life for herself and her family.
