HANGZHOU, China (AP) — China continues to dominate the Asian Games with an overwhelming display of talent.
In the last edition of the games held in Jakarta, Indonesia five years ago, China won 132 gold medals and a total of 287 medals. This time, with five days remaining, China has already broken its record for gold medals and is on the verge of matching the overall total from the previous games.
China has won a total of 290 gold medals, almost half of the total medals awarded. Their overall total stands at 255, just shy of the 287 mark set in 2018.
It is common for host countries to perform well in events such as the Olympics or Asian Games when they have the “home field” advantage.
Roller Skating Mishap
A South Korean skater, Jung Cheolwon, mistakenly celebrated his victory in the 3,000-meter relay, only to find out that Taiwan had finished first. South Korea finished a close second.
Jung apologized to his teammates for his error, admitting that he let his guard down too early and didn’t give his full effort at the finish line.
Uzbekistan’s Kurash Challenge
Uzbekistan, known for its expertise in the ancient martial art of kurash, didn’t completely dominate the sport. The debut of kurash in the 2018 Asian Games saw Uzbekistan winning four gold medals out of seven, with China and Iran also winning gold in this event.
China’s Yu Dan, a former judoka, clinched the gold in the women’s 70-kilogram final, taking advantage of the similarities between kurash and other martial arts.
Triathlon Triumph
Japan completed their domination of the triathlon events by winning the mixed relay, following their victories in the men’s and women’s individual events. China settled for silver, and Hong Kong took the bronze in the team event.
Takahashi, one of the Japanese triathletes, admitted it was a tough race but she gave it her all until the very end.
Esports at the Asian Games
Esports has been one of the most talked-about events at the Asian Games. Going into the medal games, China led the medal table with three gold medals and four overall, closely followed by South Korea with two gold medals and four overall. Thailand also won a gold medal, while Taiwan had four overall but didn’t clinch gold.
In the bronze medal match of the Dota 2 event, Malaysia defeated Kyrgyzstan 2-0. China faced Mongolia for the gold medal.
China’s dominance in the Asian Games is unmatched as they continue to perform exceptionally well across various sports and events.
