WASHINGTON — Actor and disability rights advocate Selma Blair on Monday joined President Joe Biden in recognizing the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. Blair, known for her roles in Hollywood films like “Legally Blonde” and “Cruel Intentions,” walked alongside Biden to a ceremony on the White House’s south lawn. Accompanied by her service dog, Scout, and using a cane, Blair showcased her resilience and determination.
Upon reaching the stage, Blair commanded Scout to lie down, drawing laughter from the crowd. As Biden prepared to pet the dog, Blair intervened and instructed Scout to stay, causing Biden to assume a more formal posture. Her comedic timing and confident demeanor brought levity to the event.
Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, has become a prominent advocate for disability rights. In her speech, she emphasized the need for laws and policies to reflect the value and worth of disabled lives. Blair thanked Judy Heumann, a renowned activist who played a pivotal role in securing the legislation being celebrated, for teaching her self-worth.
President Biden also praised Heumann, acknowledging the power of grassroots movements in driving progress. Both the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 have been instrumental in combating discrimination against disabled individuals.
Biden highlighted the significance of these laws in promoting equal opportunity, inclusion, and dignity for all Americans. He emphasized that the American dream should be accessible to everyone and called for ongoing efforts to achieve true equity.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Biden commended the bipartisan support behind the passage of both acts. These landmark pieces of legislation continue to shape a more inclusive and equitable society.
