Best Buy is discontinuing the sales of DVD and Blu-ray movies by 2024, both in physical stores and online.

Sales of these physical movie formats will continue until the end of the 2023 holiday season. The decision reflects the changing preferences of consumers when it comes to how they choose to watch movies at home.

“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago. Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech,” said a Best Buy spokesperson.

The decision to stop selling DVDs was made nine months ago. This move also eliminates Best Buy’s former exclusivity for “Steelbook” titles from various studios, with Paramount Studios already moving its exclusives to Amazon.

It’s worth noting that Walmart still holds a significant market share in DVD sales, with 45% according to The Digital Bits.

In addition, Netflix, which initially started by mailing DVDs to customers, has recently discontinued its DVD rental service.
