The Washington Commanders are facing the possibility of playing this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles without their starting middle linebacker, Cody Barton.
Barton sustained a suspected ankle sprain early in last week’s loss to the New York Giants and was seen leaving MetLife Stadium wearing a walking boot.
The severity of the injury will determine when Barton can return to the field. The team is expected to provide an official injury update after Wednesday’s practice.
In Barton’s absence, the Washington defense struggled, particularly in the linebacker position. Jamin Davis and David Mayo filled in but both players missed tackles. Davis also committed a crucial penalty that extended the Giants’ final drive.
Barton was the team’s “green dot” linebacker, meaning he had a headset to communicate with the defensive coaches on the sideline. When he left the game, Davis took over those responsibilities and played every snap for the rest of the game.
Washington also utilized Khaleke Hudson at the linebacker position for 36% of the snaps, which was more than usual. DeJon “Scooter” Harris is also available for additional depth if needed, although he only played on special teams during Sunday’s game.
