Rescue Efforts Underway in Nepal After Deadly Earthquake Claims 157 Lives

The death toll of a strong earthquake in Nepal has risen to 157, according to the National Emergency Operation Center. Most of those killed were crushed by debris when their houses collapsed. The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, occurred at a depth of 11 miles and its epicenter was in Jajarkot district. Rescue operations are hampered by blocked roads and the difficulty of reaching remote mountainous villages. The government is working to provide aid to the affected areas and is also focused on finding survivors.

Local television footage showed troops recovering bodies and assisting in rescue efforts. Communication remains cut off in many places, making it difficult to determine the full extent of the damage and casualties. Medical personnel have been flown to the affected areas where hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal visited the region and brought injured people back to the hospital on his helicopter.

This earthquake is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of Nepal to seismic activity. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake took the lives of around 9,000 people and caused extensive damage to structures. Neighboring India has offered assistance in the rescue efforts.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and solidarity with the people of Nepal, stating that India is ready to provide any necessary assistance.
