MGM Resorts International has reached a tentative labor agreement with two unions representing hospitality workers in Las Vegas. The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165 announced the deal, covering 25,400 workers at eight MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas, including Aria, Bellagio, and MGM Grand.
The unions, affiliated with UNITE HERE, also struck a deal with another major resort operator, Caesars Entertainment, ahead of the strike deadline set for Friday. Negotiations with Wynn Resorts are still ongoing.
The unions have been in negotiations with the resorts since April, and the tentative agreement with MGM Resorts would prevent a strike, pending the members’ ratification of the new contract.
Ted Pappageorge, the head of Local 226, expressed satisfaction with the new deal, emphasizing that it would empower MGM workers to support their families and thrive in Las Vegas. The agreement includes substantial wage increases, workload reductions for some members, enhanced safety protections, and other benefits, according to the unions.
MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle also welcomed the tentative agreement, highlighting the significant pay and benefits boost for the Culinary Union employees and the reduction in workloads. The deal also addresses the impact of new technologies on union jobs, providing some safeguards for the workers.
The deals with the resort operators were reached just ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a Formula 1 race expected to generate substantial revenue for the hospitality industry. MGM Resorts anticipates significant ticket sales and hotel revenue from the event.
