Alina Habba, the lawyer representing former President Donald Trump, announced on Sunday that she plans to file for a mistrial in Mr. Trump’s New York fraud case due to concerns of bias and political motivation.
According to Habba, the case has been marred by issues such as a partial gag order and the sole judgment of the presiding judge, Judge Arthur Engoron. She emphasized the need for impartiality in the trial process.
The lawsuit, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges that the Trump Organization misled financial institutions and insurers by inflating the organization’s net worth to obtain favorable loans and insurance rates.
Judge Engoron has already ruled that fraud has occurred and the trial continues to determine the extent of damages. James seeks to obtain over $300 million in damages and aims to prevent the Trumps from conducting business in New York.
Mr. Trump’s legal team is set to begin calling witnesses, with his son, Donald Trump Jr., scheduled as the first witness.
The case has attracted considerable attention due to the high-profile nature of the parties involved and the potential impact on Mr. Trump’s business operations in New York.
