BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina’s right-wing presidential candidate, Javier Milei, received a mixed reception at the renowned Colón Theater, reflecting the country’s political division ahead of Sunday’s runoff.

The audience at the premier opera house expressed both support and criticism as Milei attended a performance of “Madama Butterfly” alongside his girlfriend. Some attendees verbally insulted him, while others applauded and requested photos.

There were also reports of orchestra musicians playing the “Peronist March,” the anthem of Milei’s opponent, Economy Minister Sergio Massa.

Journalist Luis Novaresio, who was present at the theater, noted the unusual atmosphere, dismissing earlier claims that Milei had been asked to leave and stating that he stayed until the end of the opera.

Milei, known for his admiration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, has been vocal about his anti-corruption stance and plans to reduce the size of the state and combat soaring inflation. This has sparked passionate opposition, with many viewing him as a threat to democracy.

Both Milei and Massa have entered a campaign blackout period ahead of Sunday’s vote, and Milei’s appearance at the Colón Theater has propelled him into the spotlight on social media.

“What a beautiful work Madama Butterfly,” Milei commented on X early Saturday, followed by the letters “XD” representing laughter.
