Shaquille Leonard Joins Eagles on 1-Year Contract After Being Named 3-Time All-Pro Linebacker

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed three-time All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard to a contract for the remainder of the season. This move comes after Leonard was released by the Indianapolis Colts late last month and met with both the Eagles and the Cowboys.

Leonard expressed dissatisfaction with his reduced playing time at the Colts and is now looking forward to making an impact with the Eagles as they aim to return to the Super Bowl.

Despite being hampered by injuries, Leonard’s addition is expected to bolster an Eagles defense that has struggled in recent weeks, conceding significant yardage and touchdowns in successive games.

The linebacker, who was drafted 36th overall by the Colts in 2018, is known for his remarkable performance on the field, leading the league in tackles and winning the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2018.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, who previously worked with Leonard at the Colts, praised the linebacker’s ability to disrupt opponent offenses and make crucial interceptions.

Leonard’s impressive rookie season marked the beginning of his journey to become one of the NFL’s most formidable defenders, earning him multiple All-Pro selections and Pro Bowl appearances.

In 2021, Leonard secured a lucrative five-year contract extension, becoming the highest-paid off-the-ball linebacker in the NFL, a testament to his exceptional skills in creating turnovers and shutting down opponents.

However, despite his outstanding performance in 2021, Leonard battled through significant leg pain, eventually requiring back surgery before the 2022 season to address a nerve injury. This led to a series of setbacks and limited his appearances for the Colts.

Throughout his time with the Colts, Leonard demonstrated remarkable on-field achievements, amassing an impressive record of tackles, forced fumbles, interceptions, and other impactful defensive plays.

Additionally, Leonard’s off-field contributions were recognized through awards, nominations, and his advocacy for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Coach Sirianni expressed his admiration for Leonard’s character and emphasized the value of his playing style, acknowledging the impact he made both on and off the field.
