Delta Air Lines Assures Protection of Aircraft from 5G Wireless Signals

Delta Air Lines announced on Thursday that it has successfully upgraded its aircraft fleet to safeguard critical equipment from interference caused by 5G wireless signals. This enhancement fills a potential vulnerability that could have disrupted flights during periods of low visibility.

All active Delta planes now have radio altimeters that are protected against interference, ensuring that no aircraft will be restricted due to weather conditions.

Earlier this year, around 190 planes out of Delta’s total fleet of approximately 900 lacked the necessary upgraded altimeters. These altimeters use radio signals to accurately measure the height of a plane above the ground. While Delta experienced no significant issues with altimeters during the summer, the airline had considered rerouting these planes to avoid situations with low visibility while waiting for new parts from a supplier.

Delta was the only major US carrier that missed the July 1 deadline set by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to upgrade all altimeters ahead of the summer travel season. Most airlines complied with the deadline, retrofitting their planes before wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon boosted the power of their C-Band 5G signals. Despite initial concerns, there were no noticeable disruptions to flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration and some aviation experts have expressed concerns about potential interference between C-Band signals and radio altimeters. However, the Federal Communications Commission, which granted 5G licenses to wireless companies, has stated that there is no risk of interference.
