LOS ANGELES — Actor David McCallum, who gained fame in the 1960s as a teen heartthrob in the hit series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and later became known as the eccentric medical examiner in the popular show “NCIS,” has passed away at the age of 90.

McCallum died on Monday of natural causes at New York Presbyterian Hospital, according to a statement from CBS.

“David was a talented actor and author, loved by many around the world. He lived an incredible life, and his legacy will endure through his family and the countless hours of film and television that he contributed to,” said CBS.

Originally from Scotland, McCallum appeared in several films including “A Night to Remember,” “The Great Escape,” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” before finding fame in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” in the mid-1960s.

The success of the James Bond books and films led to a surge in secret agent-themed shows, and Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, contributed some ideas to the development of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” according to “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Book” by Jon Heitland.
