Brendan Sullivan had an impressive game as Northwestern defeated Maryland 33-27 on Saturday. Sullivan threw for two touchdowns, passed for 265 yards, and added 56 yards on the ground. This was his third start of the season and he proved to be a key player for Northwestern.

Unfortunately for Maryland, they were without co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin, who was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence. His absence may have had an impact on the team’s performance.

Despite trailing 27-17 early in the third quarter, Maryland was only able to score a field goal after a 12-play, 38-yard drive. The Northwestern defense held strong, and Sullivan made a clutch pass to A.J Henning for a 34-yard catch, setting up a field goal that extended Northwestern’s lead to 30-20.

After another defensive stop by Northwestern, Sullivan connected with Joseph Himon II for a 53-yard catch and run, leading to another field goal that put Northwestern ahead 33-20.

Northwestern’s success this season has been unexpected, especially after a 1-11 record in 2022 and a hazing scandal that led to coach Pat Fitzgerald’s departure. Despite being the underdogs, Northwestern proved themselves on the field.

Maryland’s quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns but was sacked six times. Maryland had a chance to mount a comeback, but a dropped pass and an interception ended their hopes.

Looking ahead, Maryland will host Penn State, while Northwestern will host Iowa at Wrigley Field.
