NEW YORK — Snoop Dogg, the iconic hip-hop legend and well-known marijuana enthusiast, has announced that he is going to stop smoking. In a message shared on Instagram and Twitter, he asked for privacy and stated, “After much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke.”
Snoop, also known for his ventures in the weed industry, did not provide further details in his brief announcement. This decision comes shortly after the introduction of a new marijuana-related product bearing his name. Representatives for the 52-year-old rapper, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., have not responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
Many of Snoop’s fans were surprised by his decision and have speculated about what it might mean for his future endeavors. Some have questioned whether he will switch to another form of THC or embark on a new business or marketing venture. Others have shown support for his decision, suggesting that it may be for his personal health. Marketing and branding experts have noted that such unexpected announcements from celebrities often spark a variety of reactions among fans, who have long associated them with certain aspects of their persona.
Americus Reed II, a professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, stated, “You feel a certain way about this particular person who’s iconic in your life for various reasons.” He explained that fans tend to create their own narratives to understand why the celebrity made such a pivot.
Reed also pointed out the risk of allowing speculation to fill the silence and the challenge of controlling the narrative without additional context. However, he suggested that the buildup of interest resulting from the announcement could lead to a larger announcement in the future, potentially contributing to future ventures, especially in the expanding cannabis industry, which extends beyond smoking to include edibles and infused beverages.
It is expected that Snoop Dogg will provide more information regarding this announcement soon. Whether it is to address the speculation or to lay the groundwork for potential future ventures, particularly in the growing cannabis space, remains to be seen. Snoop has been open about his love for marijuana and has launched numerous business ventures in the industry, such as his cannabis brand, Leafs by Snoop, and collaborations with Martha Stewart. Recently, a limited edition, bag-lighter combo named “Best Buds Bags” was announced by BIC EZ Reach Lighters, a venture involving Snoop and Stewart.
