Elizabeth Tabish, the actress who plays Mary Magdalene in “The Chosen,” has given viewers a heads-up about the emotional intensity of the upcoming episodes in the hit streaming series. She wants fans to be prepared for “a lot of grief” in the new season, which is set to premiere in February. Given the focus on the life of Jesus and his followers, the themes of pain and sorrow should not come as a surprise to most viewers.

During a video interview with The Washington Times, Ms. Tabish shared, “It’s a really painful season; there’s a lot of grief in this season.” She also hinted at the difficult events that lie ahead, including Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, his crucifixion, and Mary Magdalene being the first to encounter the resurrected Christ at the tomb.

Reflecting on the emotional toll of her role, Ms. Tabish expressed, “I think about it all the time. I realized after each season’s finished filming, oh, there’s more, and it gets harder; it’s going to get harder and more painful.” She emphasized that the emotional strain extends beyond the portrayal of events in the show, involving the intense and repeated emotional scenes during production.

Ms. Tabish pointed out that the new season will address challenging questions, such as why some individuals are healed by Jesus while others are not. Despite the heavy themes, she highlighted the hopeful elements in the story, emphasizing “the relief that comes from Jesus, the peace that comes with that, there is light to the dark, that there’s purpose in all of these things.”

When discussing her personal journey with the show, the actress revealed, “I was going through a depression before I booked the show. I don’t think I would have booked this role had I not experienced that and felt that. I’m constantly surprised by these gifts that come from pain. And these wonderful things that come from really difficult experiences.”

Furthermore, Ms. Tabish acknowledged the weight of responsibility in portraying such a significant figure in Christian history. Recognizing the familiarity of the events to billions of people worldwide, she expressed both eagerness and trepidation about embodying these pivotal moments. She emphasized the constant awareness of this responsibility and the impact it has on her portrayal.

Overall, Ms. Tabish’s portrayal of Mary Magdalene has not only been cathartic for many viewers but has also been a personally therapeutic and transformative experience for her.
