Taulia Tagovailoa Leads Maryland to Big Win Over Towson with Four Touchdowns

Taulia Tagovailoa had an impressive performance as he led the Maryland Terrapins to a dominant 38-6 win over Towson. Tagovailoa surpassed 8,000 passing yards for his Maryland career and accounted for four touchdowns in the season opener.

In the first half alone, Tagovailoa threw for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and also scored a rushing touchdown. He finished the game with 260 yards on 22-33 passing. This was the ninth time he has thrown for over 200 yards in a first half and the fifth time he has accounted for four touchdowns. It was also the first time he attempted 32 passes in the first half.

Tagovailoa’s first touchdown came with his legs as he ran untouched for a 23-yard score. He later connected with tight end Corey Dyches and receiver Jeshaun Jones for two more touchdowns to give Maryland a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Kaden Prather also contributed with a touchdown catch before halftime.

Dyches had a standout game, hauling in six receptions for a career-high 108 yards and a touchdown. The offensive line, which had a new look with only one returning starter, struggled early on, leading to the Terrapins relying heavily on the passing game.

Despite facing some pressure, Tagovailoa was not sacked and showcased his rushing ability, ending up as the leading rusher in the first half with 28 yards. Running back Roman Hemby had a slow start but picked up momentum in the second half, finishing with a touchdown.

Defensively, Maryland held Towson to just 128 passing yards, and Tigers’ quarterback Nathan Kent failed to complete a pass in the first quarter. This win marked Maryland’s 12th consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent and their 20th straight win over an FCS opponent.
